The solution: While lift gate was pushed to the down position (but wouldn't lock). I gripped the power-opening latch over the license plate and held it for 5-10 seconds. It beeped during that time. I assume a '17 is similar except they break the ground to all of them or break the ground to the rear and disable the logic for the front. In any case, there may be a discrete ground wire running from the driver's controls to the back two doors.
I might have missed it, but I don't see anything in the Owners Manual about this. It does have a feature that will prevent locking the doors when the key is in the ignition switch, and interestingly, according to the Owners Manual, a dealer can turn this off (page 2-9). But that's an anti-lock, not auto-lock, function.
