The "Flat Stick" has a small collar that locks the ball to the brass thread they epoxy into the ball in whatever direction desired. They supply a special wrench to tighten in the shifter kit. But IMO a large round shape like a 2 1/4 inch diameter cue ball size helps especially with my often used 4th to 7th shift.

The shifter doesn't control the preciseness of the shift. That is controlled by the transmission.
