I think for Primary/secondary, Status and AoE is more important than Damage, because Melee is so powerful with CO. Viral Toxin should beat Viral Slash against Corpus, but it's tough getting that combo on a single weapon. Viral + heat is good vs almost everything, but corrosive and radiation have their uses as well. It's best to bring a primary and secondary combo to deal with multiple threats. Heat is the best single damage type at the moment. It's good vs infested good vs Grineer hp, good vs armor and puts a DoT on enemies.
Against armor, I usually use another toxin or electricity mod, to add more weight into corrosive damage. This allows you to proc corrosive a lot often. If you use taxon, use heat, if not, or needing more reliable cc, use cold. Fire has cc and dot, combined with striping with corrosive, can be pretty good.
