Zoning is achieved by using a solenoid valve for each zone - 2 in your case after the pump. You only use one pump. The Thermostats - 2 in your case control the solenoid valve. So when your downstairs thermostat calls for heat it opens the Solenoid valve, the pump starts and your boiler goes into action. Same for upstairs.My current set up consist Intergas Xtreme 36 boiler with two Opentherm inputs. Nest 3rd gen connected to one Opentherm input to control the boiler. The system has a one zone Taco switching relay and five Taco zone valves. BTW, the thing works great. So on a call for heat I would assume that the zone valve opens and the secondary circulator starts up directly. But this doesn't seem to be the case. The valve opens but the secondary circulator doesn't come on. Not right away.
