This is his question: "I replaced the load control shaft and seals at the bottom of the transmission. I put the load control level in "D" before this. I also put new oil in it. The 4010 and VERY early (IIRC, pre-'65) 4020 tractors DO have a 3rd reverse. The later early models and on only have 2 reverse gears that are sped up. The the early ones, 1st reverse is the same speed as 3rd forward, 2nd reverse is like 5th and 3rd reverse is like 7th. So, 3rd reverse is 12mph. Recently, after trying to start the tractor I noted the starter ran on after I released the key from the start position. The only way to stop the starter from turning was to removed the left battery terminal which resulted in a large spark.We have 9 3020-4020 tractors and they all act as you describe.We just live with it because after 1 minute all the hyd. work fine,part of farming with 40-50 year old tractors.I don't start in the mornings like I did 25 years ago either.LOL. OP.

Slow cranking and short solenoid life is a symptom of a 4020 that needs an auxiliary cranking relay installed. The stock cranking wiring is too light for the load and allows the solenoid to trip in /out of contact like a machine gun, leading to slow cranking and short solenoid life.
