Lim gasket 3800.
I am interested in purchasing a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GT 3800 with only 84K miles on it. Everything inside and out is pretty much mint. However, there is a definite oil smell when running and when looking under the hood, there is oil (I think it is oil) visible along the entire length of the front/top of the engine.
Location: Ames, Iowa. Year and Trim: 98 Caravan is the daily driver 215K. The external leak is not typically what we expect from bad LIM gaskets or a bad UIM. More likely the coolant elbow or a bad o-ring, seal or gasket on that end of the engine. There are a lot of places to look.Post subject: Did newer 3800's get aluminum LIM gaskets from the factory? I just purchased a ZZP intake, ported SC, and a Garlock LIM gasket. The intake has a lot of meat removed between the blower output and the wastegate hole. Trying to determine if this open area should be cut from the gasket, or left alone. ZZP seems to indicate the latter, and I am not buying into that. If the gaskets are leaking externally, change them NOW!!! Bar's Leaks will be worse than nothing since it's giving a false sense of security. Also, it won't work with the design of the LIM gaskets.
