If you run without thermostats the water is circulating too fast and doesn't allow the cylinder head to run at the proper temperature and doesn't allow the cooling water to take the heat from the engine.

Forum Rules. I have a 1985 Mercury 150 Black Max that is overheating as soon as you put the power to it. It will idle at 145 degrees all day but as soon as you raise the RPM's it gets hot and the alarm goes off. It does not cool down after it gets hot. It has a brand new water pump, thermostats and poppet.
