Powder for 45-70.

In my Browning BPCR 45-70 (1885 JMB design made my Miroku), I'm shooting 250 gr. TSX FB bullets with Vv 120 powder, pushing those bullets at 2,550 fps. (Barnes Marlin load). This gun has a 30" bbl and is my "primitive weapon" for deer hunting. I'll use it this up coming weekend. If you load it to little you cause a high pressure problem, if you load it to much you cause a high pressure problem. Hodgdon does not even list a load with it. It should give around ~1200/1400 fps in your rifle. I have used it in one of my 45/70's but, not by itself, I used it as a priming charge for 4831, for a better loading density. H110/296 is a excellent reduce charge powder. In BR shooting, it's not position sensitive.

Heck, I even looked in my Hodgdon manual and could find no loadings using H110 for the 45-70. The .454 Casull had a load of 28.5 gr of H110 for a 300 gr JFP bullet, but showing 44.2K of pressure. The .475 Linebaugh had a loading of 27.0 gr for a 385 gr cast LRNFP at 45.3K pressure. A 420 gr cast LRNFP had 25.0 gr with 36.7K pressure.
