The game is about what GM and players imagine. If you played pathfinder both 1e and 2e only for combat - I'm sorry for you missing the big part of the fun. But don't say the class is awful just for being weak in one aspect of the game. The combat isn't everything. Sadly that hasn’t made the transition to 2e yet (which seems to be the edition that the OP and their mate were talking about) - Vigilante has but it’s become a class-agnostic archetype rather than a full class. Not sure how they’d do Magical Child this time around except as it’s own distinct class-agnostic archetype.
