To duplicate the 45/70/405 infantry load I like slower powders like 4759 and 4198.Not sure how it will work in 45/70 but found BD works well in 30/40 and 30/06 using max load of UNIQUE as a starting load, and starting load of 2400 as max. IMR3031 is THE smokeless powder for the 45-70. I use it in my Pedersoli Springfield Trapdoor. I don't believe I use buffers except w/ black powder. Its a great powder VERY versatile. It is made for a specific reason its a BULKY powder, initially perfect for SASS type shoots where folks wanted light loads in large cases like 44/40 & 45 Colt.
