As well as Ryze needs the mobility from phase rush in heavy CC teamcomps. Plus Ryze is a mid range mage and first strike relies on you hitting the enemy first, any other longer range champ makes the rune useless. Just use Phase Rush , the movement speed will save your life many times over.

TL;DR: be tankier = live longer = more EQ. Final Build: Crown, Mejai's, Lucidity boots, Fimbulwinter, Demonic Embrace, Rylai's. A pseudo-tank Ryze build if you're tired of getting blown up by everybody. You can survive a lot longer in fights while still dishing out damage. With Riftmaker you have a bad early and mid and a bad-decent lategame. It's a fun build that works when you're better than your elo, but not on serious competition i think. No pro ever builds or even tries Riftmaker also. I've seen some pros go Crown, seraphs, Rylais. Should be a decent build against assasins.

My build is usually rav hydra - swifties - infinity edge - and then manamune bc its blue. hes viable (or as viable as ryze can be) anywhere. mid and top are his best lanes and they are very close in viability. just go a normal build top, maybe take ghost into something you need to kite hard (like trundle, darius, garen etc.) It’s not super rare or anything. Young ryze is the rare one, tribal is meh. I was confused about that too. In real, young ryze is in the group of rarest skins in lol... I've never seen someone use it ever so it's rarer than Pax Twisted Fate which I've seen 2 times so far. Yesterday i checked last few 14.X patches and he legitimately has a nightmare win rate in EUW Diamond+/Master+, and it genuinely feels like an automatic loss when he is drafted. He's actually pretty durable with his Quas minibuffs and early-game consumables in the early game phase. A lot of people don't really bother funneling resources to him any more as an average Invoker with enough levels can already do a lot with damage spells like Chaos Meteor(Meatball!) and a Deafening Blast. Ryze is a simbol of battlemage, ap dps. Of course, Ryze has been used as a supporter on top lane with tank itmes in 2013 ~ 2014. However, the other whole history of Ryze was a simbol of late game ap dps. Unlike Cassiopea and Azir, the other ap dps mages, Ryze does not have to worry about aiming.
